The Logan Hoodie – Made for Mermaids
If you know me, you know I love some color. Even so, I have not had the opportunity to try color blocking until now! The Logan Hoodie from Made for Mermaids is a fantastic color blocked hoodie that lets you have three (or more!) of your favorite fabrics in one beautiful garment.
The Pattern
The Logan is a super comfortable unisex color blocked hoodie made for medium weight stretch knits. Some ideal fabrics for this pattern include French Terry (which I used), Stretch Fleece and Cotton Lycra. You can also use fabrics like Double Brushed Poly if you are going for a more relaxed and longer fit.
This pattern also comes in many size and sleeve options giving you so much versatility!
Sleeves: You can choose between Sleeveless, short sleeves, cuffed long sleeves or hemmed long sleeves
Length: Banded crop or banded sweatshirt though you could easily make this a hemmed bottom by increasing the length a bit.
Other options: A hemmed and/or drawstring crop,
The Fabric
I knew exactly what fabric I wanted to use for this project as soon as I knew I was going to be a tester. I had pre-ordered this fabric from Blended Thread Fabric several months prior and was just waiting to use it as a coordinate for other projects. But after seeing this hoodie as a color blocked option, I knew three of the colors I had would be perfect together! All three fabrics I used for this project are a French Terry base and called “Linen Look” though they are a dark grey, light grey, and blue.
Usually when I am trying to decide on a fabric combo, I will first lay out all the options I’m considering and see what looks the best together.
Though this fabric was not on pre-order or retail at the time of this article’s writing, it regularly comes back into rotation. I HIGHLY recommend getting some when it’s available again! Also had some assistance from my two kitties in choosing fabric 🙂 (Link is orange, Ganon is the tuxedo kitty)
I had my colors picked out but knew I couldn’t just pick and choose what color I wanted on the fly, this required some planning. Something I have not done in a while, but was perfect for planning out this pattern, was make a mockup! I use a program called Clip Studio Paint where I trace around an image to get the outline of the hoodie. From there, I was able to play around with which piece I wanted to be a specific color. As you can see, I tried out a few different options before settling on my final hoodie combo.
Sewing!
As I mentioned at the beginning, this was my first time attempting to color block anything. I’ve always thought the look of a color blocked piece looked very unique but never tried it. I will say it was much easier than I anticipated and will definitely feel confident doing it again in the future. I definitely think the key factor is having a well made pattern 😉
Now, the biggest tip that I can give, and is also given in the pattern, is to make sure to cut ALL the pieces to be color blocked on the same side. What I mean is, if you cut one piece with the right side facing up, you need to cut the rest of the pieces right side up. Otherwise you end up like I did with two pieces that fit together perfectly and one piece that would not fit and be facing the right way. When you’re in the zone with finally sewing the garment, it’s the worst feeling to need to go back and cut something over again! I would recommend either cutting all pieces, color blocking or not, the same way or have some sort of cue or reminder of what way you cut.
Final Thoughts
I’m always a fan of hoodies any time of the year. But when you can give them a little extra flair, it makes that hoodie a little extra special. Since I have made this garment, I have been reaching for it and wearing it constantly now that the temperature is cooling here in New Hampshire.
