Roxy
FINALLY I can go outside and not need a jacket or to layer up and the Roxy is here to ring in the season! Spring is here and I am so happy to be able to sew more and take my photos outside (comfortably). The Roxy is a cold shoulder shirt that adds a touch of class and style to your typical wardrobe. Especially if you have been living in PJ’s like I have for the last few months.
The Pattern
I was so excited to make this pattern when I saw the shoulder cut outs. I don’t have any shirt that is like this in my wardrobe, ready to wear or handmade, so adding something unique to my collection always gets me excited!
The Roxy pattern comes with 3 sleeve options as well as a choice of hem or banded sleeves (or none if you’re a rebel like me!) I decided to forgo the hem because I liked the length of the sleeve without the alteration, but also due to the nature of the fabric and that it was white at the end of the sleeve, the hem would stand out more than I would personally like.
The Cold shoulder is the highlight of this pattern and what makes it stand out. The way the neck binding is done is very similar to that of the Lucy which I made last summer. This top can easily be made to dress up a date night, or even as a casual top around the house.
The Fabric
I’ve been going through my Blended Thread Fabric stash and this one stood out to me specifically for this top. This is a bamboo fabric base with an absolutely gorgeous pattern called Gold Overcast. Something about bamboo is just so amazing to wear and work with.
The fabric is very light, and has a cooling effect on the skin making this a great summer top. It also have an absolutely beautiful drape that most other fabrics just can’t compare too. The actual pattern on the fabric was absolutely stunning as well. Something about contrasting colors like blue and gold just look so good together. When first looking at it, it’s almost like a geode!
The only downside to Bamboo is how easily it wrinkles. But that is nothing a quick steam or press can’t fix!
This bamboo is 95% Bamboo 5% Jersey, four way stretch that is 230 GMS.
Feedback and Final Thoughts
I really love how this pattern turned out. The fabric being bamboo almost always works well especially when a little drape is needed. Because I made the Lucy last summer, I was already familiar with the neck binding steps but for someone who has not made the Lucy, my piece of advice is to PRESS everything! By pressing the neck binding into the necessary 4 quarters, the fold seams are set in place, and make the fabric move a lot less when stitching.
So far I’ve only made the Roxy in Bamboo, but I’m going to try out a few other bases before this summer is over!
