ABC Pattern Stash Challenge,  Sewing,  Things I've Made

Jersey Skirt

Back at it again with the #ABCPatternStashChallenge! Took a bit of a break through June with some meetings and planning for the wedding taking up my time but I’m back and ready to sew! I’ve decided to go down to one pattern per week to keep it a more sustainable pace with the wedding just a few months away.

With all that, it’s time to show my J pattern! The Jersey Skirt from Ellie and Mac Patterns!

The Pattern

The Jersey Skirt is a double layer flowy skirt that is great for both two-way and four-way stretch fabrics. What is nice about this pattern is that having two layers allows you to really mix and match your fabrics and gives a cute “pop” of color for the under layer. This pattern comes with a nice sized waistband as well and is gathered with elastic at the joining of the waistband and skirt.

I made a size large for this pattern based on my current measurements.

The Fabric

The fabric I chose for the Jersey Skirt are two Double Brushed Poly fabrics. The first layer was made with the red floral, with the second underlayer being a solid white dbp. Unfortunately these were two fabrics that I’ve just had in my stash uncatalogued but I’m happy I was able to finally use them!

This DBP was a 4-way stretch. I did find after constructing the skirt it was a bit heavier than expected.

Feedback and Final Thoughts

To be quite honest, I am not really a skirt person. I do really like how this skirt turned out but I do have a few things I would change if I were to make it again.

1. The gathering method. If I were to make this again I would not try to gather the skirt WITH the elastic. I struggled a bit because it was a newer technique for myself, but I also just was not a fan with the end result compared to if I gathered it using the usual method (pulling the basting strings). This is something only I am really able to see with this skirt but I didn’t find the gathers to be uniform.

2. The 2nd layer placement. The suggestion within the pattern is to off center the lower layer by approx. 2-3 inches. For my preference, I would probably have it be rotated 45 degrees to the outer layer. By doing that, you would see the second layer a bit more.
