Calgary Cardigan – All the Pattern Options!

So many cardigans! We’re finally through the heat wave here in the north east and it has me craving some cooler weather. What better way to get ready than to make 4 cardigans? I wanted to take the opportunity to sew up all the options available for the Calgary Cardigan from Pattern Niche to compare because I was having a heck of a time deciding which one to make!

Options

I won’t be listing much on the pattern itself here as I was able to guest post over on the Pattern Niche blog! Head over there to get a very in depth comparison of each of the Calgary’s options!

Sizing

Size range for this pattern is XX-Small (00) through 30. To give you an idea, the XX-small size bust is 29″-31″ and size 30 bust measurement would be around 55.5″. I fell in between a size 8 and 10 and decided to make the 10 for all options.

ALL OF THEM!

The Fabric

While choosing what fabric to use for each cardigan, I decided that I wanted to use different bases for each as well to showcase the different drapes. I went into more detail over at Pattern Niche, but will give a quick snippet of each here!

Blue Floral: This was a Yummy Rib Knit from Amelia Lane Designs called Edgar. This is a very lightweight rib knit with excellent stretch and recovery.
Orange Rust: This beautiful fabric is a Faux Cashmere Brushed Alpaca (color Rust) from Mily Mae Fabrics which is unbelievably soft.  Even so, I found this fabric to have a bit more body and structure to it giving the final piece almost a blazer feel.
Grey Stars: This beautiful jersey sweater knit is called Celeste and is also from Amelia Lane Designs. I found this to be the most drape worthy fabric, especially paired with the tunic length!
Pink and Black Floral: I had to try at least one fabric that was closer to the minimum stretch required for this pattern (35%) and happened to have this scuba on hand already! This scuba had about 40% stretch and you can see clearly that it has a lot more structure and feels more fitted than the other garments. I got this fabric from the Fab Clique Fabric Shop

Feedback and Final Thoughts

Likes and Dislikes

Something to note: The front bodice piece can be a bit tricky to cut as it contains a few versions all in the same area (I cut one out that had the square band but neglected to be attached to the bodice…oops!) Since making that mistake, I now understand how it is supposed to be read, but something to keep in mind! Review the cut charts before cutting!

Any Modifications?

I made all pieces as the pattern suggested. Only “hack” was the slouchy pocket which was a well known/popular hack.

Would I make this again?

Absolutely! I have to say my favorite one of the four would have to be the tunic length with slouchy pockets. It suits my style of comfortable yet stylish and pairs well with a lot!
