Agnes Top
Pattern number one is now complete for the ABC Pattern Stash Challenge!! What’s funny is this was one of the very first patterns I ever “purchased” and it took me this long to finally make it. The Agnes Swing top and dress is a fantastically easy pattern that was a great kickoff to this pattern stash challenge!
And did I mention, this is a FREE pattern!?
The Pattern
For a free pattern, you get SO many options! Because we are currently in the inbetween seasons season, I was on the fence about which option to make. As the last few days have been getting near 70 though, I ended up deciding on the Shirt length tank!
This pattern comes in several lengths and several sleeve options:
Swing top in Peplum length
Dress: Knee length or Maxi
Sleeves: Short, 3/4, long, or tank.
and option inseam pockets.
I made the Tank Top option size 10/12
What is Peplum Length?
Peplum (pep-luhm) is a short, gathered, slightly flared strip of fabric attached at the waist of a woman’s blouse, jacket, skirt or dress.
This shirt is specifically Peplum length which means approximately 2" below the hip flaired out. This gives a very flattering look to your garment and body, especially when you have higher hips like me!
I found the binding of the neckline and arms to be very easy to install. Bands which are then pressed to give the flat neckline appearance. The neckline is also high which looks great!
The Fabric
Oh how I love this fabric. Whenever you find a fabric that has it’s own name, you know it is going to be amazing. For my Agnes, I used some beautiful rib knit from Amelia Lane Designs called Evans.
This light blue floral rib knit is so soft and cozy. The flowers are a mix of purple and yellow which adds that touch of spring!
4 way stretch, 180 GSM made of 87% Poly 13% spandex giving it great stretch and recovery.
Feedback and Final Thoughts
So funny story. I initially intended to make the knee length dress version of the Agnes. When I started cutting out my pattern, I realized too late that the back portion of the dress would not fit in the fabric that I had left. There was about 4 inches of fabric too short to make a complete dress. I almost completely scrapped the project to pick a different fabric but ended up deciding to see how the top would look. I was able to salvage the front pattern piece to be cut to the peplum length top, and the back was cut to be the same.
I wanted to share this with you to point out that just because the original intent of the project doesn’t work out, doesn’t mean you can’t still get a great piece from it! I am very happy with how this top turned out.
One pattern down… 25 to go! 🙂
